Canada resumes nuclear ties with India

Ottawa — Canada said Monday that it is resuming nuclear co-operation with India after a strict seven-year moratorium.

Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew said Ottawa is changing its policy and is now ready to supply India with dual-use technology that can be used in Indian civilian nuclear facilities.

Canada imposed the moratorium in 1998 when India tested nuclear weapons and political rival Pakistan quickly followed suit.

Mr. Pettigrew also said Canada and India are exploring the possibility of direct sales of nuclear products by Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.
