Greenpeace squeals at plan to patent a bigger, better pig

Monsanto has filed international patent applications seeking patent protection for both a pig breeding process and gene markers that indicate pigs with better meat characteristics.

Monsanto and Greenpeace agree that the patents are not about Frankenpig. However, Greenpeace argues that Monsanto is trying to corral a monopoly not only on these methods and technologies, but on each individual pig produced by using the patented methods.

Monsanto is "seeking a patent on the actual pigs which are bred from this method," according to Greenpeace.
