Jeanie at KAF
Hi Everyone from my new home:)
I have made it safely to KAF (Kandahar Air Field) and am now thoroughly entrenched in the US Army zone. There aren't that many Canadians here yet, we don't have our own gym, but we do have tent space .... this is a very good thing! I have the same size bedspace as I did in Camp Julien, but a crappy spot this time (last one in, gets the crappy spot) But no need for whining ... its at the front so I can come and go as I please and not worry about waking anyone up.
The US contracts a company to do their cooking, cleaning etc just like the Canadians do in our camps ... I have to admit, we have a better set up than the US. But I think its because our camps are never 7000-8000 people like this one is (apparently...I've heard anywhere from 5000 to 8000) so who knows.
Nat and I are trying to get some time in the American gym to start teaching some classes and run some tournaments but its a popular place so I'll find out tomorrow what they'll give us:).
I leave soon for my holidays too so its mostly just for Nat to do while I'm away ... poor guy!
News .... I might be staying another 3 months but at a different camp (outside of Afghanistan). They asked me today but I think we need to negotiate a little on it. 9 months would be fun but I'd like to get back to Canada at some point!
It's cool here ... tons of helicopters, all the cool ones:). The camp is bigger but for where I need to go its pretty close for walking. We have a place called Canada House where the Canadian TV comes in via satellite and our phones and internet computers and a little TINY store (think a concession in the fort smith arena ... without the hamburger grill!). Anyway, we all hang out there when we're not doing other things. Its a little weird though because now we have 3 kitchens we can eat in so you're not guaranteed to all eat together like in Julien, and after having Lane and Nat and I attached at the hip for the last month its a little weird to have our independence back:).
So, that's my story:) ... hope you're all doing great. I will send pics soon .. esp of the gym ... Jeanie :)
