British Columbia: Deadly fungus spawned by homosexual spores

"Researchers in the U.S. report that a deadly fungus, which spread from Vancouver Island to the mainland, was spawned when two less-dangerous strains engaged in a homosexual union. Cryptococcus gattii is normally restricted to tropical and subtropical areas. In 1999, it began to infect people on Vancouver Island, and three new cases were discovered on the mainland this year. More than 132 people have been made ill on Vancouver Island, and four have died. The fungus lives in trees and soil, and has also infected dogs, cats, llamas and porpoises. Now, scientists at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, who compared fungal gene sequences, have identified two strains of the fungus in B.C. They believe the lethal strain was created when fungi of the less hazardous version mated with a member of another, yet-to-be-discovered strain. An earlier revelation that the deadly strain was all of the same sex, or mating type, gave birth to the theory that the dangerous strain arose from homosexual mating."
