Canada won't be the world's 'handmaiden': Martin

"Prime Minister Paul Martin said while Canada recognizes the need to satisfy U.S. security demands, Ottawa won't become a "handmaiden" to any superpower.
... Martin said that in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington, Canada must demonstrate its ability to defend its borders. But the prime minister added that Canada will play a greater role in the world than that of handmaiden. He stressed the need for Canada to be active in areas where the world is changing, and to work with rising economic superpowers.
The superpowers of today and tomorrow "have got to learn to work together," said Martin, which is why he's pushing for the reform of world institutions like the UN and the G-8. ..."
