U.S. ANNOUNCES NEW PASSPORT INITIATIVE
"[...] The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will require all travelers to and from the Americas - including U.S. and Canadian citizens - to have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States by January 1, 2008.This is a change from prior travel requirements. For many years U.S. citizens, and some citizens of other countries in the Western Hemisphere, including citizens of Canada, have not been required to present a passport to enter the U.S. Other forms of documents, less secure than the passport, have historically been accepted.
In light of the new security efforts, the United States is requiring travelers to have a passport or other accepted document for entry into the United States.
This initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed timeline is as follows:
December 31, 2005 - The requirement is applied to all travel by air or by sea to or from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Central and South America. This applies to Canadian citizens transiting the United States en route to or from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Central America, or South America.
December 31, 2006 - The requirement is extended to all air and sea travel to or from Mexico and Canada. This applies to Canadian citizens traveling by air or sea to, from or through the United States.
December 31, 2007 - The requirement is extended to all air, sea and land border crossings. This applies to Canadian citizens traveling to the United States ....."

I'm so stunned that they're dragging out the requirements to the end of 2007. I thought there was some urgency to tightening border security.
Sure, there's some urgency - they're increasing the number of grandmas strip searched at border checkpoints, while the bad guys walk through the woods or swim the rivers to get across.
Somehow, they've got to balance the asshats and liarbilities...
One way to beat this is to book a flight to Mexico, and cross over the southern border. Load up your suitcase nukes, anthrax, machine guns, whatever, and stream across with the nightly hordes.
My wife and I broke down and got passports to expedite crossing into Canada to visit my brother in Lethbridge, AB. It cost a little over $100 each, and signifies what?
I am hoping that the 7/7 London bombing and bombings to come will unite people in the belief that we cannot build defensive walls around ourselves. We need to intensify military, economic, political, and intellectual offenses against Islamic extremism.
